THE NEW BLUE
Ten years after The Pixie Williams Collection was released it was time to reimagine
the music legacy of Pixie Williams for a new generation to enjoy.
Shining the light back on one of the most significant unsung musical stories
and important chapters in the history of New Zealand music,
The New Blue tribute album was conceived to commemorate the 70th anniversary of
Blue Smoke's release, 80 years after it was penned by Private Ruru Karaitiana in 1940
aboard the troopship SS Aquitania.
The troopship SS Aquitania being escorted leaving Wellington Harbour on 2 May, 1940
with composer Private Ruru Karaitiana of the 28th Maori Battalion on board.
"This is a true tribute, with musicians and singers combining together to produce
a remarkable piece of work, packed full of emotion and feelings, showing off their own skills
but also ensuring we never forget the person who came before,
a trailblazer in New Zealand music, Pixie Williams."
